Banishment - buggy or strange revision

This was cast on a balor during a raid earlier and as well as destroying it, removed all buffs from friendlies in the AoE... is this spell not meant to be a banishment spell now or may I ask what the purpose of it is

Was a damn bad timing to as it stripped me of all my buffes when the Talon implode me

It's had a secondary effect for the past year or so, removing some negative effects from allies in the AoE or some nonsense like that.
It's been unaltered since then.
It's possible I broke it while adding a hook to a few spells.
I will look into it.
