A Tale of Two Servers

Post  Rhine Jive Click on Mon Apr 04, 2011 6:30 pm

So there was a mention of the two servers, this one and the Exodus that was recently put up, coming to some kind of solution to having a split playerbase. By the more recent talk of implementing new scripts (which are present on Exodus, no less) in this module, I take it that it's no longer on the table to simply use the refined version of Genesis?

I'm mostly posting because I wonder if this is an aversion to having to start new characters or what. In my opinion, Exodus is an improvement on Genesis in the options for mechanics, builds, appearance, and scripts that are present - I'm not going to make an advertisement for it, but it looks like this module "wants" to go in that direction but the playerbase is not taking the easiest route.

To be perfectly blunt, I am more or less saying that I don't understand a thing about the current setup and steps being taken. I, for one, would rather play on Exodus; I don't expect everyone to agree, but I have many reasons to think so (changes are actually documented, more class/build options other than MothDC or Tank with Ice Storm or gtfo, less "win button" mechanics, etc) and I take the liberty to say this assuming that, beyond the characters already made (which can be remedied, maybe), no one has a vested interest in keeping Genesis afloat - if anything, it costs time and money, right?

I sound like I'm going many ways about the bush here, because I realize it's tacky to say what I'm saying. But I am really confused when I read what people on this community post about (RP builds, less metagaming, more player impact on world events, etc) and see that they stay on the server that has the least tools in place for that to be done. Is it simply the lack of commitment of the population as a whole to shift over? I realize playing as 1 of 4 players can be boring, but that's only the case as long as it's the case.

If there are other reasons people prefer Genesis, I can understand (maybe, teehee), but I guess I'd just be disappointed if in the "solution" between the two, it ended up that the most primitive of the two modules is what the community went for.

I agree, although I may have some bias.

Since Exodus was put up I have not been back to Genesis.

I think people don't want to restart, again, that could be the largest issue. No one has voiced any critique of Exodus yet, so that might be worthwhile - though critique them both.

lol Scholar, I'd recognize your article even if I were blind.

I also completely agree with you, and I wouldn't mind joining the Exodus, IF you somehow managed to get my new character from Genesis to Exodus. (well, not just mine)
I simply don't have the time to start a new character every week anymore.

Well as far as I know, there will be changes to this mod that the -players- want, not just "this is what we are gonna have and thats it". Me personally, I would have an issue playing on two different servers, and I like the player base here on this server for the most part, and they are working hard to make it an even better place.. so.. I see no reason to play on exodus and start all over again.

Yep, the playerbase is nice. I only thought that it would be the condition that the population would migrate to Exodus. Otherwise it would die. Again.

That was my main motivation for posting, actually: the changes being made to Genesis are making it more like Exodus. So why not go to the server that has all these features (chat commands, subdual, etc)? As well as the fact that we presume what the DM situation on Exodus will be if the population migrates, but we don't know. It could be the same ones for all we know, but that depends on them discussing things over.

As far as starting over goes, it's not hard or long to level on Exodus (the XP scale is a bit high for my tastes, even, but if people are worried to restart it's a good thing). The RP stories will probably have to start from scratch, though. However, with the Exodus population currentl low enough that no fort RP is really moving anything along, I'd like to put forth, for those hosting that will decide this, that we could just start over there with what was done here as the starting point.

The population is nice, yes - that's why I'm so confused in my first post: the community being the same whatever the server it plays on, why does it choose the module that is a husk of the one it's being turned into?

And I'm not Scholar! How dare you insult me like that.

I switched from this one and from what ive seen its better.

Everything looks great and is much better for roleplay. The xp is high, but that suits me fine (I think it's 53 for a goblin elite here and 202 there, so about 4 times). I think it's more focussed on roleplay than the grinding here, I played for an hour and got lots of xp by roleplaying and had fun with some weird goblin rituals d^_^b. It just needs more people, but it has about the same as here if you ignore people that are afk.

With the death penalty as high as it is I wish the experience here was closer to there.

But yeah it is a little high.

Still, just leaves more time for role-playing I imagine.

I've been away a while and not really playing either Anphillia very consistently, so I didn't get a chance to post this earlier.

Just to let folks know, Thonil (DM on Exodus) said he would be fine giving people who have a character here start with a boost in gold and XP, and to let the RP story of the island begin on Exodus where it currently is on Genesis. Also, he said he'd consider making the DMs here DMs there (and likely more), the goal being that there would be a DM on most or all of the time.

He told me this a week ago or more, when this topic was newish, but like I said I haven't been very focused on gaming lately (or able to).

My question is, why should a higher playerbase server choose to merge into a low playerbase server? it should be the other way around. Just sayin.

Exodus has some great changes and we will likely use many of them here as we have the lead dev of Exodus working with us now. With my limited knowledge of Exodus here are a few changes I didn't like. I personally don't like how large every area is there. It takes much longer to travel places, makes my character feel smaller and for people with slower PCs areas can take a very long time to load. In addition there was a spawning system that tended to lag the server I am not sure if it was fixed or not over there. It would be a shame to have 20 some people playing there only to find out that under that player strain the server lags too hard to do anything. To reiterate I like almost all they did there and much of it will be changed here. The devs there also know their stuff. I am unsure of their primary concern when changing things there but ours here will be lag and server strain. Anything that has a risk of effecting either I don't want to mess with.

Same module concept, better module. More versatility in builds, more features for both PvP and RP, less "win button" dynamics, and the list goes on. I figured that, since at least 20 people are interested in playing Anphillia, and that the changes being put into this module are from Exodus - why not host Exodus? I guess slightly larger areas is a reason not to - I was on Genesis briefly last night and it lagged more than Exodus ever did when it was running. If the host doesn't like Exodus, it's fine, but those reasons sound like a copout. No offense. But if the players aren't interested in the server that is the end product of what this Genesis is being turned into, then what can I say?

I just wanted to put the point forward that, for all the reasons that the changes being put in here are considered "improvement", Exodus is an "improved" version of Genesis. In my view, at least, it's like people are choosing a pony over a race horse for a race.

It sounded to me like you wanted to swap servers, not modules. My mistake.
