Annnnd that's a wrap

Post  _Shortstack_ on Tue Oct 29, 2013 10:40 pm

Sorry folks, I'm gonna take my leave. Not only is the xp penalty just complete and utter bullshit, I have worked all day and hit level 20 a total of 5 fking times. We can't even have our levels be locked in when we finally achieve them after we've basically had NO choice but to get them by ourselves?

Yeah, I don't think so. This is just demoralizing, really. See ya!

I know that to a newcomer this is gonna sound nasty, but:

xp penalty is just okay...otherwise there would be no fear of deaths. At level 20 that's what...3k xp?
You can have that back in like 10 mins.
But I can see how playing a meleer with close-to-no-good-equipment that might be harder, also nobody showing you how and where to level up...

I apologize on my behalf, but currently I'm busy with work and also trying to crawl out of silver elo hell and reach back to my Golden V league Smile

Sorry to see you go mate!

Agreed.
The trick is to find safer ways to level if you are a meleer.
Like using summons.

It's hard, I know.
But so much more rewarding if you stick with it.

19 to 24 ish does seem to spike in difficulty compared to everything else. I always had the roughest time with that stretch of levels when just starting out. I would implore you to stick with it through that, it does get a bit easier. Moth is right, a meat shield summon is exactly what you need.

I'm right there with you brother! I find myself going afk more and more. I guess nwn does that to you nowadays. I don't think it is this server specifically because I used to play anphillia and it was the best rp moments of my life. Sure everyone could have an attitude check and maybe put a little more effort but I don't really blame them. We are fresh and new so we are more enthusiastic haha.

OmegaChaos wrote:Sure everyone could have an attitude check and maybe put a little more effort but I don't really blame them.

I do blame them... because no matter how oblivious they might act to what they do... they are still enjoying the server at the slight expense of the enjoyment of others...
Sadly... and luckily... a lack of ooc-consideration and proper 'roleplay' is not a bannable offense.

Sadly because they won't change, so others might just have to tolerate them and learn to ignore them.

Luckily because... well;

I recall pre-wipe/migration, there was a player who used text smilies during ... interaction... "roleplay" if it can be called this... but they are new to the whole... rp idea.. and they unexpectedly indirectly cause a very funny moments. Shame they never stuck around.. or stopped playing, but their legacy of 'xD' lived on...
I forget how Sniqow managed to make it legitament rp friendly.. Exdee or something to that affect. It was fun, I miss the days of Vice and his bicurious tendences with Desmond and hadawash. Razz
(So glad I took screenshots of at least the dialogue, will serve as good nastalgic reads if we reach a phase of no anph server)
-------------------------------------------------------------

So all in all... even players who don't know of or follow the guidlines for 'roleplaying' and ignore or don't know the module's setting of two armies at war
(A sort of self-centered attitude of not wanting to pvp, so they lashing out at players who do pvp)... can still contribute to the enjoyment -if they chose to do so...
But they really have to be willing to take the enjoyment of others into account once in a while. Smile

You learn to love the big XP penalty...

I've been playing anph since the begenning and it didn't me a long time to understand why its there, it did however take me a very long time to appreceate it.

The most simple way I can put it, for me is this; it makes for some very dramatic deaths, you eventually learn the mod AND game so well that you can predict a wipe or the death of a character before it happens if you haven't already learned that skill from years of nwn. A sixth sense...

There comes this fight or flight moment where you ask yourself if its worth the XP loss, you can commit or wimp out. That's why I've always usually played a half-orc barb, because it's the closest thing to the klingon mentality on the subject if that makes any sense to you.

Anph wipes usually go like this.

Character One (makes hero klingon it's a good day to die decision)

C1: Everyone run!

Characters two and three start running

Character two notices character one has stayed behind

Character three new to the mod runs all the way to the dungeon entrance

Character two has "that moment" and turns to assist character one

Character one and character two die in a dramatic and heroic fashion, which stimulates the release of seratonin in both players brains, boosting enjoyment of said game and mod.

Two characters have several almost bi curious bro moments in the fugue, fist bump and reassert their sexuality with a series of awkward statements pertaining to ale and whores with large breasts to re-assert their sexual orientations with each other and themselves.

Or ALTERNATIVELY

Character one and two pull off some awesome fighting moves and prevail in the fashion that only highly trained videogame atheletes can muster.

Gay sex is had almost immediately thereafter.

At least that's how it goes from my experience.

Minus the gay sex of course, I'm into chicks with big tits, I drink beer and spit.

But its there for a good reason, and no matter what you or the thousands of people have had to say about it it wont change. In the last 8 or so years anph has been around I doubt anyone will care if the one thousand three hundred and thirty second person has come with a complaint about the XP penalty in the form of a forum post Wink

Sniqow, almost everything you said, I found to be legit and well explained, until you said this:

Have people seriously not figured out that this kind of attitude is not how you grow/revive a playerbase? The reason MIGHT be good IF you have an active playerbase where there are plenty of people working together. When players are forced to go out by themselves on a server specifically designed for groups, this kind of xp penalty is actually, quite stupid. At level 18, to respawn, is actually close to 6k xp.

I don't log on to die, and have to wait hours in the hope that someone will come along and save me from having to erase a day's worth of work. I'm not a power-leveler. I am a rper/crafter before anything, and I'm getting penalized severely for it. I don't mind working, or being challenged, even if I have to do it alone. But at least give me a fair chance lol. Many of you have been here for a long time and know the ropes. New players do not, and if there aren't going to be people to help them, then common sense dictates that you need to lighten the hell up a bit ffs.

And contrarily, if you're actually serious about getting new activity from the playerbase, maybe it's time to take the "this is the way it's always been" mentality, and shove it; since it's obvious from the lack of folks playing the server, your "previous strategies" aren't working anymore, are they.

I bet some of those 1,332 players you seem to think little of, likely included many quality, mature, rping gamers that I'm sure would make things on this server a hell of a lot more interesting and fun if they were here.

Furthermore, I find your "gay sex" and "chicks with big tits" comments to be childish, ignorant, and offensive.

How's that for a "forum post"? Wink

:PIt's better than the first one, I guess... always good to have a detailed explanation of what people disagree with.

I don't know what sniqow's point was but I assumed he could have been refering to all the old posts on this forum complaining about xp penalty and a number of players asking and begging for it to get decreased and for xp gain to be increased.
Which seems harmless compared this perspective.

And I think I remember there were updates to slightly improve these issues... Pvp death xp penalty was decreased compared to Pve.
(possibly to prevent all that pvp logging.. oops.. I meant.. nwn crashes, which a few players kept suffering from whenever their hp was getting low or didn't feel like pvping. & to encourage more pvp Wink!)
At lvl 40 the max xp penalty is 8-9k (another 8-9k if using the orb...)

Usually xp penalty for death is supose to help players be less likely to throw their char's life away... but as I said in previous post... this doesn't seem to be the case... (in some cases though it's no one's fault but lag or not knowing the mobs, of course...)
As a brit player often said in jest (in tells/ooc talk).. Anph is a never ending deathmatch.

double-post...

Shortstack.. you shouldn't return...
this server/community doesn't deserve a second chance from you or anyone who gave it a try and suffered disapointment... just be glad that it was the server's structure that let you down.. and you've not seen the major faults/dissapointments of the community..

Trust me the staff not budging on requests/changes is a very minor disapointment that this community can provide. Even the inactivity is trivial in comparison to the real issues.

You are better off never getting to and experiencing the end game with a lvl 40 and bothering with pvp. I don't think there is much 'good sportsmanship' left on this server with the players who remain pvping.
Gaurenteed, unless the opponant wins... all you get is hate/hostility and if you win, you are likely to just get twisted view points of pvp standards which solely work towards their advantage.

For example... a player assaulting while there is only 1 low lvl enemy online... can claim a pvp fight is only fair if the archer npc's aren't envolved... This same player.. promoting "fair pvp" will also partake in pvps where they out number 1 player... without a second thought. Hypocritical, self-centered poor sport... who ends up calling you a bitch when you point out any of their contradictions.

I usually enjoyed a few pvp matches on this server... key word being few.. because the majority has always involved a negative result of opponant's tell exchange being hostile... win or lose, outnumbered or evenly matched.. at least one player fighting against me has always managed to ruin the experience by being a bad sport about it.  Some didn't even need tells.. they've just pvp log or use some odd exploit to their advantage.
(because winning in pvp seems to always be more important that the wellbeing of the server and it's playerbase...)

But.. ultimatly.. it's really up to you to take a gamble that the same things won't end up happening to you... if you return and participate in pvp... who knows the few who are left might actually stop feeling so entitled to win in pvp.. and learn how to say good game.. and make it an actual good game.. because winning a pvp match has never and should have never turned into ruining the game for someone else, like it seems to have turned into.

------------------------
This rant is being posted because I'm sick of players having twisted view points on pvp... if I can willingly subject myself to unfair matches in an attempt to keep the purpose of the module active.. instead of just walking away (like so many other players have done.. and refuse to return..)... why couldn't the players who are left learn to stop being so damn self centered? -even after 2 or so years...
Pvp me.. beat me.. that's fine.. I'll pvp again like i've been doing... dispite losing.. and dispite the negative reactions from opponants... even after that 'horrible first experience of uneven pvp (8v1).. with the responce/solution I was given being.. "Just don't defend",
I just wish players were mature enough not to spew out bs of what a fair pvp is and isn't after they've 2v1'd me a few times.

How is that not a decent reply? It seems a valid question. All of us use different logins for personal reasons, so Moth may not realize if you're playing or not.

Also it's really really hard to respond to a rant where the incident that CAUSED the rant is implied. No specific incidents are referenced or pointed to. Are you upset because people are unfair in PvP? Or is it just because people send you hateful tells whenever you're involved in PvP?

And if it's the latter, how exactly am I supposed to deal with that? I can't stop people from sending tells, or even see what tells are sent. You can do exactly what I've always done, and not dignify them with a response.

The fact of the matter is sometimes PvP is going to be unfair. And it will make you angry. I've had my share of PvP flip outs. I remember when I made a 40 bard before everyone and their brother made a 40 bard and I was holding off 7-8 Axefell by myself with my bag of mass heal scrolls. Then they got smart, the 2-3 of them that weren't on their characters that had hellball relogged to the characters that did, and without even being able to see me they cast all their hellballs at the archer and killed me in the AoE. 8 hellballs. Not a damn thing I could have done about it, and I was very mad because of it. Most PvP you can find something you could've done differently and something that can help you win next time. Was it "fair"? No. Is it a part of one's life when PvPing in NWN? Yes. Was it fair to the Axefells that a 40 bard at the time was so OP that with ONLY the help of some archers and stacks on stacks of Mass Heal scrolls could keep them out of the gates without super lame but perfectly legal tactics? Probably not, but also not illegal. So what is the leadership staff to do?

I'm sorry TheVaals I didn't mean to offend you in any way. Trust me I just want to play. I have never bitched and whined after pvp nor did I say anything offensive to you. It's just that every single time I talk to you you seem to have a certain attitude towards me, very insulting and I'm not sure how I've deserved that.

He also does not read every recent topic, apparently.

http://anphgenesis.forumotion.com/t906-note-posted-to-each-fort-s-bulletin-scavenger-hunt

But i could consider the notion that... someone might assume a player would not bother creating a char and playing.. yet still.. for whatever reason partake in forum rp..... weird assumption to make since no one has ever done that in the history of this community...

Yet my gut tells me that his reply really does.. seem ill intended, compared to yours... which has context and genuin curiosity and quantity/quality to it.

I'll prove it's ill intended through a simple example so you can see his reply from my perspective..
person 1 rants about how horrible their car is...
Person 2 asks if the car is still being used
Person 1 infact does still use their car.
Person 2 argues that the car can't be that horrible if it is still being used.

Now why would anyone remotely bother with that twisted logic? Least he could have done is replied with the whole obvious argument he was leading into right away... instead of passive-aggressively leading into it.

Even if I didnt still play here... if my post is referencing a time where i had played... judging that time as horrible... such a reply would serve only to question the validity of my obervations.
He might as well of replied with "Do you even know what you are talking about?"

I could try pointing out every incident in the past leading up to this point, and trust me.. there are many with one major theme.
-But I'd have to point fingers at specific players to give context to the situations and why they aren't trivial...
but if certain players can't handle someone pointing out facts about how pvp is... if the pvp in question seems unflattering to them and they become enraged enough to call me a bitch over it..
then i doubt the truth is welcome/accepted here... not even opinions seem welcome on there forums...
If I can be gaurenteed my posts would not get me banned or they wouldn't be deleted.. I'd have no problem making several blog type entries with screenshot evidence of certain offenses... but that wouldn't accomplish anything... the justice of proving I speak the truth wouldn't even be worth the effort, since last time I did this.. the player only got banned for 1 week... then nearly got to host the server.
-as can be seen in pervious posts already on the forum.

As I stated in my rant post.. Dispite the unbalanced pvp, I still actively pvp'd.
If people still want to see this as me being a sore loser.. complaining about losing... then I don't know why they'd delute themselves into thinking a sore loser still participates..
usually a sore loser... avoids losing... pvp logs... stops pvping all together... so my continueing to pvp.. continueing to lose.. counts for nothing because certain close minded players/people will always have the mindset of.. "This player who keeps pvping even though they are losing.. is a sore loser just because they are pointing out facts about the pvp instead of being silent about it".
if silence is the only thing that'll satisfy their ego... then screw them and they can continue having that twisted view point to protect their pathetic ego... I'm not in the business of providing ego boosts to such a mentality.

Rann Cora wrote:

The issue here can't be fixed by anyone but those individual players who discourage pvp by reacting the way they do. They need to be the ones to decide to remain pleasant company towards one another, not even an enforced common courtesy rule would work. Since we do actually have that rule... and courtesy is rare these days compared to how it was slightly less rare in the past.
Not saying every player still lurking around is horrible when it comes to pvp.. I'm saying there are more jerks than decent ones left... at least in terms of opponents... I don't know whether fellow axfells harrass others after killing or dieing.. but from my perspective they seem to be good sports/decent adults about pvp deaths/wins.
I had hoped once unties got banned and I returned for a ... 4-5th time (lost count..) I'd be able to pvp.. without having to deal with petty guilt trips (from players argueing that I shouldn't be pvping) and childish bickering (from players who can't handle me pointing out facts of what occured during the pvp).

By ruining it for others.. I am not saying losing in pvp should count as ruining it. Ruining it by being a massive internet troll jerk-face with an attitude so repulsive it discourages pvp/playing is what I've been talking about.

Because it's apparent the server as it is now.. little to no rp.. so the only things left to do are... pve, ats... and maybe sometimes pvp... for me.. pvp has just definitly been removed as an option due to the lack of sportsmanship.
I've gotten way to much negative feedback and entitled attitudes thrown my way...

Still.. I remember the few good pvp moments.. where I'd lose or win.. and the enemy would remain pleasant.. dispite the outcome. There was no.. "You're not allowed to kill me" complaining... or "You shouldn't pvp that way because it's not to my advantage" points of view...
I've tried ignoring people who have these mentalities... Focus on the fact that this module is pvp.. and pvp is permited no matter how much a player who doesn't want to pvp might whine/hate me.. or pvp log on me... or how much a player who doesn't want to lose or accept that they can lose might forget pvp events and pretend it occured differently.. which flatter's their skills in pvp.
But I can't ignore it anymore.. I can't stop it from being just 1 big discouragment.. I had hoped.. they'd realize to knock it off or keep it out of ooc.. but maybe they are oblivious to it.. since they don't seem in the business of trying to keep the server alive.

I hope there are player's left for them to pvp, if not they'll be stuck pveing for the relic for a while.. and I honestly hope they complain and find it boring that there is no more pvp if no one else is around to provide pvp for them... not even then will they learn.. "hmm maybe I shouldn't have discouraged that 1 player who has always been around to pvp since now they don't pvp anymore and other high lvl axfells aren't as active to pvp.. so now there is less pvp on this server."

---What the leadership staff can -avoid- doing is making the community worse with replies that are pain stakingly obvious with ill intentions of argueing against player's oppinions with a method which shows little to no courtesy...
Because of the community has a ratio of 5:3 players who suck the enjoyment out of the game for others... the least the staff can do is balance it out by not being as bad as said players.
(I do consider Moth to be techniquely part of staff, if he shouldn't be considered staff.. then I guess it doesn't matter how much of a troll he decides to be on the forums. I'll still see trolling as trolling though.)

Herbaliz wrote:I'm sorry TheVaals I didn't mean to offend you in any way. Trust me I just want to play. I have never bitched and whined after pvp nor did I say anything offensive to you. It's just that every single time I talk to you you seem to have a certain attitude towards me, very insulting and I'm not sure how I've deserved that.

Claiming that I'm acting like a bitch again... implying I am a bitch and you've every right to openly call me it... is what offended me.

You make it sound like we speak often, which we do not/have not.
Last time.. before you lashed out at me.. tells were exchanged.. which seemed just fine by me.. you asked for another round of pvp.. so I complied and let you try out your other character in pvp and it kept going up till Sexy got tired of their lag... it was fun.. one of few times I've pvped while Rann began hosting where I wasn't pvping solo.
I didn't even mind your... what seemed like.. 'playful teasing' of asking for more rounds... I got the lack of pvp and taking the opportunity to set up matches while there was activity.
and I didn't mine the death from reshift disabling me before I got to pick up sexy's corpse...

Herbaliz wrote: I remember you teasing me with tells in the middle of pvp when you were playing Vice. Funny how you never did that when we played on the same side.

As Vice I do not recall mocking enemies in Tells.. Especially during pvp...?
because I had been harrased by undying to the point of him telling me to kill myself and insisting that I'm a slut -just for rolplaying being a wife to another player's character..... but he was apparently a dick to more than just me.
So no I wouldn't do onto others what has been done to me... Because I know what offends me so why would i inflict that onto someone else.. even if they might not be offended by the same things...
infact the only time I've ever cussed towards players who killed me in pvp was waaaaaaaaay back in the first year (early) of this community being formed.. I took a break and came back with determination to be more tolerant and courtious.. and less sensative/attached...
it's same time I stopped myself from cussing towards teammates for dieing during pve... I've alleviated myself of being feeling responsible for the success of other players in terms of how fast they get to lvl 40 or if they keep their xp. Despite being hasseled to constantly assist them to gain more xp to lose and having to wait longer until I have backup for pvp... I managed to find peace with it.

So I simply can't take your word for it with the accusations you just made, got any screenshots of it?

Herbaliz wrote:You should read your own tells, you're the only one I can't seem to get along with on the server you know. "And I'm the reason the server is dying (among other things)".

And since you miss quote me I'm less likely to trust your memory vs mine. I've got the whole convo of ours screenshoted... from beginning to end. It specificly went

(what seemed to be neutral convo before then suddenly)

Me- "you said 'if we actually fight' :Pi thought that was you claiming i wasn't fighting you"

You- "are you gonna act like a bitch again, please don't I haven't said or done anything to you"

You- "Yeah it's fair if we fight away from the arcehrs"

Me- "act like a bitch? no need to resort to name calling.. just chill and wait for livemage or felix to be active.. then you can go back to enjoying the type of pvp for you.. team vs 1 player.."

You- "ok I'm done, every time I say something to you it's the same thing"

Me- "you called me a bitch"

You- "why do you think I did"

Me- "doesn't matter.. you shouldn't be so bluntly hostile and cussing at tells to other players... attitude like yours is why server is so empty (among other reasons)"

Me- "I've yet to call you and livemage dickwads for enjoying unfair pvp vs 1 player... Razz"

You- "sorry if I said something that offended you, have a great weekend"

Saying "you're the reason the server is dying (among other things)" is to much of an extreme statment which doesn't leave much room for any objectivity even with the added on consideration of other factors involved...
and it isn't at all logical... a community can't be killed by just 1 player...
but it can be killed by 1 type of behavior shared and common among multiple players.
So I know better than to make such a claim...

Unless I'm wrong and you lot still around want to turn this server into a free for all.. We can cuss out people through tells nonstop to our hearts content? Anyone?
I don't think I'm wrong about the preference being to not have cussing through tells or hostility...

---------------------------------
So please don't even try to miss quote me.. or try and downplay the fact that you lashed out...
And yes i still do strongly believe and feel that such an attitude of being justified in calling people a bitch whenever you want to is one way to help empty out a server.

And don't worry my rant isn't at all focused mainly on you and that 1 incident... it's a build up of multiple incidents all bassed off on other players lacking courtesy and consideration even some team mates.. with how they demand attention and help.. or else.
There is a diff betwen asking a player to go somewhere.. "lets go and mutually get xp/gp/resources" and constantly hasseling them with "hey help me get a lvl, hey lets go to condors, hey you should be around more to get me xp, hey i heard you can solo assault and even though I have lvl 40s... go fetch the relic so I can leach better auto xp on my alt".

side-note.. even when playing as Myra, our char's rarely if ever roleplayed and were rarely.. if ever... involved in the same assault.. and definitly never in any defenses... So maybe that contributed to the matter of us never exchanging tells while being on same team. Maybe if we did interact more then you'd know me better and there wouldn't be this perspective of me having an attitude towards you.

Shortstack, you remind me of myself when I first started playing here. If not for becoming Magistrate I doubt I would have stayed.

I no longer play because I want too badly to change what we forget is one individuals pet project... Asking for change just incites the elders.

I agree with TherVals, as brash and truthful as ever.

That being said I did accomplish 8 characters to level 40 and a wealth of resources in a year and a half of steady playing through similarly low population.

It can be done, but I am uncertain if the ends justify the means.

For some reasons unknown to me I still troll these forums even though I am inactive. The very thing that I once criticized past veterans for doing.

Shortstack

I didn't mean to shut down your idea or offend you actually quite the opposite, I was just presenting my opinion based on years of experience playing/dm'ing the mod in a lighthearted way that didn't come off as douchebaggy, you took it the wrong way.

I understand how you feel about the XP loss, and it is a special case. Because there aren't any groups right now. Since you threw my advice back into my face quite viciously quite obviously because somones already told you the same thing and it doesn't help you one bit, I understand.

I've offered to help you in a more tangable form within the game. Just send me a message in game and I'll do my best to help you if I have time to play. Because we've all been where you are at one point, and it's frustrating.

As for everything else going on in this thread.

What we really need here is some positivity and optimism.

I've been a part of 4 or 5 different Anphillias as a player & DM and I will say one thing.

Forum drama like this, weather venting, well intended is not good for a community. I'd personally prefer that you guys worked it out in tells and if you can't then just leave it alone. I understand your reasons for saying "what needs to be said" but it just makes us look like a bunch of bickering malcontents who can't just enjoy having a mod to play on and would prefer to just dump all of our frustrations onto the forums. I've done my share of knee-jerk bitching on the forums here and I'm not proud of any bit of it.

That being said:

Some constructive critisism is needed if we want to improve this place not "the people who are running this place are assholes" there have been countless ideas and thoughts put forward.
