The Near Future
So, at the end of July, I will be moving from my current residence. This will happen on July 25th-26th. What this means to you as players, is the server WILL be down both of those days. It could potentially mean a bit more than that though. I'll explain.
The internet at my current apartment is stellar, mostly because I pay for it to be stellar. With a NWN server and TWO Xbox 360s and laptops and tablets, it has to be amazing to remain functional. Where I am going, I will NOT be paying for the internet, as I am moving in with a friend. I have no idea if hosting the server will work with his connection or not. This living arrangement will be temporary for me, but could last for as long as a few months, and then I will be back to internet of my choosing.
SO, we need a backup plan for when this happens. I have been enjoying my time staying mostly behind the curtain, even if you haven't seen me I'm definitely here. I would be THRILLED to continue hosting, I just do not know if it is possible yet, and I won't until I actually move. I'd like to have a secondary host ready to take over on the 27th in the event that I can't run the server in an acceptable, minimal lag state.
Also in the short term, our numbers seem to have dipped a bit. Not necessarily in active players because people are generally afk most of the time, but even our afk numbers have gone down. What can we do to get people back into it? I know the itch for NWN always eventually comes back to me after I quit for several months and swear I'll never go back... what has pulled people away and gotten them off the server, and what can we do to bring them back?
Is it the new Neverwinter free to play MMORPG? Cause... I wasn't that impressed.

Re: The Near Future
Hopefully we can keep you as a host even if it means no nwn for a short while.
As was said and fact; the play time of most players is rather minimal and majority afking. So the worse it does is put a pause in gathering afk xp.
Personally if the server needs to have some down time I'm willing to wait for it to come back with the same host.
(Myself, I've been busy irl & game of choice lately: Minecraft)

No one has stepped up as a backup, so let's hope this time next week I'm still able to host! Downtime will begin on MONDAY, and last until (hopefully) FRIDAY, as long as the internet service at my new place can handle it.

Re: The Near Future
Hey been checking in from time to time guys, VERY SORRY about what happend months ago when I was SUPPOSED to host the server, I ended up downloading a pop up virus when I was trying to get the server going back then and I ended up getting a new hard drive for my CPU, it wasn't required to remove the virus but it was reccomended, anyhow I seen Rann's post about possibly needing a new host so my offer is still here on the table, I'd like to get back to playing but for now Im offering to be a steady host, Rann if you need it just let me know and im more then willingly, would hate to see the sever down for good.

If somone can figure out the cost who already knows how to administrate a dedicated, paid, host where there are qualfied techs and dedicated customer support id be willing to donate all if not part of the money needed to make it happen for 6 months to a year, I'm surprised no one has brought this up or is willing to put their money where their mouth is.

If the community was not as it currently was/is... it might be/have-been worth paying for.
This of course encompasses both the 'Poor-sportsmanship'/'cyber-bullying' and the lack of time players have to be active while online.

'Kay, don't see why you couldn't take one of those check-ins as an opportunity to make a post explaining the predicament.
I'd still be willing to wait for Rann's downtime to pass if he is still willing to try hosting.
So I guess it depends on if he is willing to hand over people's current progression... or if people are willing to start from scratch.
(if Undying plans to go ahead with hosting anyways and still has the module.)

Re: The Near Future
Sorry I've been busy with work/etc and there really hasn't been anything too important for me to say, I noticed Rann's post so I figured I'd drop a response..
Also, it'd be stupid for people to start over again, the server population seems low enough as it is, for everyone to start over /again/ just seems pointless.
I was only offering to host if Rann is unable to host from his /new/ internet connection, in the event that happend I was just throwing out there that I'm still here, and would be willing to do it.

Shame you see it that way. For someone who was supposed to be the host it might have been important to explain why you weren't hosting yet. xD
Like how Felix and Rann keep players informed.

My CPU was down for over a month, by that time a host was found, you think I received the mod from felix which I still have and then just purposely disappeared or something? I'm not going to go back and forth with yah bud, if Rann wants me he will get in touch with me, thanks

Undying hosting would not be a good idea to me. I'd rather have the downtime.

LOL, thats fine with me, it was just an offer since Rann apparently has not the slightest clue on how to do ANYTHING other then host lol, the server is going to die out completely and there will be nothing left to it, I have a job making 50k+ a year so ill just concentrate on that, sorry that I offered, I don't play at the sever anyhow, numbers are lower then ever and as I said its just going to die, LOLOL, have fun!!! ROFL.

Re: The Near Future
Quit talking trash about a player who made it possible for us to play and who played by our side for a decade now.
You were unable to get in front of any kind of a computer/phone to say at least "hey guys, sorry, my PC's down."
Were you expecting a a different reaction?

Re: The Near Future
Trust me son, you don't want to start bringing up how much money you think you make in an online forum, especially one for such an old game as NWN. Odds are, you make half that, if anything. I'm not giving you hosting because you're unreliable, and your first instinct in any situation is to start attacking whoever you're involved with. If I can't host once I finish my move, we'll search for another alternative. Odds are, I'll be fine. So drop it, go work on that "job" cleaning your parents house in exchange for living in their basement and stop trolling my forums.

Re: The Near Future
We need to start thinking outside the box IMO.
Only now we have a population shortage it's true, the uncertainty of a long term host, the fact that the game is 10 years old, fact that its summerand a recent and somewhat unexpected wipe are contributing factors but I personally think that if we put in some work and get our ducks in a row that we can keep anph going for another good run.
My idea is the kickstarter, and I will pledge $100 if enough people are willing to put their money's where there mouths are and secure at least a year of hosting altogether. So however much a reliable professional third party host costs for up to a stable 30 player server.
Pledges would get their names into the history books in the form of books in faction library's, grave stones, pieces of loot, boss npcs and faction npcs. If enough money is secured for one year of hosting Im positive people will jump in to play a role again. To discourage elitism no active character should benefit from a pledge.
The money would go straight towards hosting the game. Maybe if some of the old a anphers see that a group effort is being put into securing a host so that people know it won't just vanish one day like many nwn servers are thy will come back to play a role.
Come winter people will get bored, start googling, come back here... Just my 2¢

Re: The Near Future
So as I feared, port forwarding is a pain in the ass to set up on my new roommate's router. He's at work, so I'll work on it tonight, and hopefully post the IP then so that we can see if it's going to be laggy. That's my other big concern because his ISP also does his cable, but since he has whole house DVR it's wifi based, so even watching tv can use up bandwidth. We'll see how it goes soon.
Also Add9k, I do have a smartphone or a laptop that can access the forums.

Hope everything works out, I am willing to give up some money as well to keep anphillia around. Like everybody else the itch comes and goes so paying for when the itch comes back is well worth it.

Sorry, being a little slow, my roommate went out of town and he hasn't responded to my texts to get the password to access the router and do the port forwarding necessary to make this work. Still working on it though, just thought you guys would like to see an update.

Re: The Near Future
I'm going out of town for a couple of days on business, my roommate will be back with the password when I get back on Saturday, so hopefully once I get back we can get it rolling and we can find out if lag is going to be an issue.
In the meantime, I hope not being able to play is really giving you that NWN itch so that you'll all be ready to go when we come back!
