repeated opening and closing of doors during assaults

Post  Felix on Mon Jan 14, 2013 2:45 pm

What do you guys think? Should this be allowed? Its seems that the biggest problem from the opening of the door is it stops it from being bashed.

No.
It can drag you inside too. (even without holding W key or clicking, as some jokers mentioned)

I don't think it should be spammed, i think either there could maybe be a respectable time frame. I can understand people wanting to open the door to fire arrows/cast spells, but the door being opened and then closed to cause someone to stop attacking is abit of a cheese tactic.

But with this being said i think it goes hand in hand with abilities like Pulse going through walls, i'm not saying anyone has done it recently, but it has happened. Sorry to add more to the topic but i figured i might as well throw that one out there aswell.

I don't think it was the intention to keep you from bashing this gate by opening the doors repeately. I suggested, after at first it looked like we would defend with just the two of us, to use that spell.

Common sense = That which isn't forbidden is allowed.

By the way what's wrong with PULSE going through the walls? Are the walls magical? Do they block cold/electrical/whatever element?
And yes, I do that. Twisted Evil

Being the fact that I was the one doing this during the last assault I believe I should comment on it = P , My intention was not to stop people from bashing the gate and I had a slight intention of hopefully getting someone dragged into the gates but my sole purpose for this was to cast spells and run around a corner just as a rogue would do with Hiding or an archer would do with firing arrows from the cliffs and backing up... That being said I was not shutting the door ...that was all automatic so if anything is done minimum it should be to turn off the auto shut feature... I don't see the problem with the possibility of getting pulled into the door though its a risk you take being melee and beating on the door.. if you don't want the risk let summons and archers/mage's beat the doors down...

Your not the only one who does this. I have opened doors to let over eager attackers come in trapping them. I think the frequency with which it has been done (not just in this instance) reduces PvP to the opening and closing of doors which isn't fun for anyone Smile

If the door was left open it would be unattackable allowing a defender to then close and trap the attackers once inside.

The issue with getting bugged/dragged in is an issue with being shape shifted as a dragon and being around the opening and closing door. If there isn't room when the door closes it can at times bump-place you inside the room which isn't fair if you were only meleeing the door and not doing anything to enter the room.

Common sense = That which isn't forbidden is allowed.

Common sense dictates that to be false.

It's not written down and forbidden, to say:

  • Transition multiple times in a PvP situation to gain some sort of advantage.
  • Kill someone multiple times by raising them.
  • A bajillion other things.

It is however common sense. I would certainly rectify the situation and apply appropriate punishment if I see any of these things happening.

There are way too many possible exploits that can be used. Long story short, if you wouldn't like it being done to you - don't do it.

Anyway, more on topic - same with the gates. To be perfectly honest I can think of no legitimate reason to open and close them repeatedly. You have walls, which you can use for casting, attacking and LoS.

I don't exactly understand the problem with trying to get aggressors to spawn Calvary early ..seems like a tactic as a defense ...should us as defenders just let them lure Calvary away ? and for opening and closing the gates and such if the remedy for not having an excuse to open and close them is because we can shoot from the cliffs what about in the temple ?

I have no clue about what can and can't be done but why not build a sort of tower next to the gate with a small platform where just one person can defend and retreat when nessesary.

Not that high as the cliff but to high for the attackers to walk in.

The problem isn't opening the gates a few times to throw a spell or two out. Its more so when its spammed and mostly because it stops the attackers from bashing the gates. Perhaps a lever inside the gates and doors which opens them from the inside by anyone would be a proper solution to this problem?

What would the purpose be or what problem would doing this solve?

Opening a gate does not spawn Cavalry.

As defenders, you have the option of following your cavalry. If you choose to defend passively on walls, that's your call.

The temple is a different kettle of fish and imo it is laid out extremely poorly. If you want to cast a spell at a force bashing the gate, come from the other side - otherwise wait patiently inside.

Doors are an extremely exploitable thing in NWN, you can use them to attack NPC's without them attacking back etc. We could always simulate opening a door as a round-action, causing paralysis for a round on use - emulating the time it takes to open a door. Rather than a no-action-action so to speak.

I'm sure if the exploitable part (The action not taking any time) were to be rectified, people wouldn't do this.

In fact, they'd soon find that opening a door while someones smashing it with a big axe from the other side is not the smartest thing they're ever going to do.

How could we improve upon the temple design?

1. Transition into the temple, not in direct view of the bashable door.
2. More space
3. Hidden passages defenders can jump through from the sanctum room to the outer-part. (Ergo no need to open the door at all!

Why not make the outside door bashable and the inside all one big room.
With a secret back entrance for people to sneak out then back in while front door is being bashed.

(and while it is being bashed it locks from the inside and a cleaven/axfell key can't open it.)

The only problem this would leave is potential issue with the trans. (Over use of trans, and trans camping etc.)

That's great.

Potentially we can have the transition into the temple, transition into a smallish room which is a way-away from the relic room. Also the back way in and out of the temple could exit/enter under the walls. Then there's no excuse to be sitting on a transition!
